What is Project AFFIRM?

Project AFFIRM is a study that aims to learn more about the identity development and health of people who identify as trans or nonbinary. Our goal is to learn more about the development of gender identity across the lifespan in order to foster resilience and reduce stigma and discrimination among members of the trans and nonbinary community. Currently, we are examining the relationship between minority stress, resilience, mental health, and risk for cardiovascular disease in diverse U.S. gender minority populations.

Why is it important?

We believe that by developing a better understanding of trans and nonbinary identity development and resilience across the lifespan, we can help reduce the known and purported health inequities among trans and nonbinary communities in the United States and abroad. We hope that findings from AFFIRM will inform the development of future intervention strategies aimed at reducing stigma and promoting the health and well-being of individuals of trans or nonbinary experience, their families, friends, and communities.

Who can participate?

People aged 18 or older whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth and who are willing to talk with researchers about their unique experiences, relationships, and their day-to-day lives. Participants will be compensated for their time.

Where can I participate?

We are currently recruiting in three U.S. cities: New York City, San Francisco, and Atlanta.

Will I be compensated for my time?

Yes! Participants will meet with a member of our research team to talk about their experiences as a trans or nonbinary person and monitor their health behaviors and experiences related to cardiovascular disease risk (e.g., blood pressure, physical activity, stress, and sleep). All participants will be given up to $170 as a token of our appreciation.
